Profile of Tesshu Profile : Tesshu Yamaoka (1836-1888) Tokugawa Shogunate’s Samurai. Creator for No Sword Fencing. Meiji Emperor educational chamberlain.
Young days He was born as fourth baby in the famous Samurai family “Ono”. Firstly he was named “Takayuki” and nicknamed “Tetsutarou” He was talented as samurai sword fencing man. On the other hand, he was one of the best Sumi poem writer. Especially he yearned for the special samurai sword fencing group, “Ittou-ryu”. He grabbed the technique from Ittou-ryu master, Matashichirou Asari.
One side, his energetic life style was supported by “Zen” mentality. Particularly Tekisui, the “Zen” expert, influenced his development of unique thinking and his braveness.
Adult days He married with Fusako as a san-in-law of the master of the spear fighter, “Seizan Yamaoka”. It was after Seizan’s unfortunate death. Fusako’s elder brother was Deishu Takahashi, Tokugawa shogunate’s samurai leader.
In 1868, as you know, he met Takamori Saigo in Shizuoka. At that time, Yamaoka aged 32, but the Tokugawa’s army commissioner, Kaishu Katsu did not hesitate. He decided to identify him as a special ambassador. Due to the help of the Saigo’s great judge, Japan avoided the nonsense inside war.
Tesshu was the man of the moment. His subsequent consciousness raising activity was attributed to the above mentioned spiritual and physical training.
After the mission In 1869, he was nominated to the new national politician for Meiji government. After successive appointment, here and there local councilor, then he became educational chamberlain for Meiji Emperor.
He is alive forever, deep down inside of our mind.
